Though a cat is believed to have nine lives, Roary The Panther is about to surpass that by 21 years, making him 29 years old this year.
Having made his debut for the University’s football’s first game on Aug. 29, 2002 at the Ocean Bank Field at FIU Stadium, Roary has since heightened FIU pride. Just in time for homecoming, Roary’s Birthday Extravaganza will be held to honor an FIU tradition while getting students spirited and excited for homecoming.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea that FIU has this tradition of celebrating Roary’s birthday. Unfortunately FIU has always lacked in school spirit compared to other universities and so, on this day, we should definitely unleash our panther roar and come together to appreciate our rich history,” said Melissa Gonzalez, a sophomore and psychology major.
The event, taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in Panther Square at the Biscayne Bay Campus, will celebrate the mascot’s birthday with entertainment, food, and giveaways.
Roary’s birthday will also feature the “Panther Dessert Challenge” where students will have the opportunity to prove themselves to a panel of judges by making a spirited dessert for Roary. The panel of judges will vote and each participant will be eligible to win one of three scholarships, provided and sponsored by the Alumni Association.
Other activities include cupcake decorating and coloring. A photo booth will also be available.
“Panther Power is responsible for planning and executing this event which is a spirit council at BBC. The goal of Panther Power is to promote FIU pride at athletic events, create a community within the student body and overall affinity within the University,” said Valerie St. Juste, the graduate advisor for Panther Power.
Roary’s Birthday Extravaganza will be open to all students and faculty at FIU from both campuses and will be taking place from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
A special speaker will also be attending to celebrate Roary’s birthday with him and the FIU community, though who it is has yet to be confirmed.
“There is nothing more exciting than actually feeling prideful of the school you go to, and especially so when you have other people you can share that feeling with,” said Gonzalez.
