DM, the building that houses the English and math departments at the Modesto Maidique campus, is known for its courtyard that features a floor of loose blue crystals, air plants on the ceiling and circular bench seating. Students who attend orientation are told that this courtyard is meant to give a flipped perspective of the world, the blue floor symbolizing the sky and the air plant ceiling standing in for the ground.

The courtyard has been under construction since June 2018, and is scheduled to be finished approximately in November 2018, according to Patty Ruiz of Facilities Management.

Ruiz told Student Media that the project is to remove the loose blue crystals, which has already been done by the time of this article’s publication, and replace them with a solid tile floor. The new tiles will have blue crystals embedded in them to keep the sky motif, they just won’t move around or be removable.

Construction at this time is not interrupting access to the classrooms in DM.

Courtyard as of July 24, 2018.
