We’re living in a digital world full of smartphones, computers, tablets, gaming systems and even virtual reality.
We can Facetime someone that’s on the other side of the world, stream the latest episode of our favorite show anywhere and we can even ask Siri for help on finding a new restaurant to try.
Technology has even made breaking news easier to share. PantherNOW, for example, took to our social media to report on how Phillip Frost, the namesake of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU, was found to have allegedly committed stock market fraud. You can read more about it on page 2.

We also used our social media to report on the two FIU football players that were shot last week during a drive-by-shooting. You can check out our update on page 12.
So, it’s no surprise that we’re now able to take our education on the go too. FIU has been doing it for years, in fact, FIU Online is celebrating their 20th anniversary this semester, which is why we’ve decided to dedicate this week’s theme to online learning.
Chances are, you’ve used FIU Online at some point, whether it’s by submitting assignments through Canvas for your in-person class, taking a hybrid course or listening to a lecture in your pj’s for your fully online course.
FIU currently offers more than 1,170 online courses, with 78 fully online degree programs, but online learning isn’t for everyone. Just look at the columns in our Opinion and Entertainment section: some hate it, others love it.
Deciding what type of class to take is a personal choice but having the opportunity to learn something new anywhere anytime is something everyone should utilize and I don’t mean spending extra cash to take an online course.
As FIU students, we have Lynda, an online service full of videos, tutorials and modules on a variety of subjects and skills. Once you successfully complete a course, you’ll receive a certificate you can upload to your LinkedIn to boost your resume for potential employers. Pretty nice, right?
And if Lynda isn’t for you, just go on Youtube or Google because let’s face it, odds are if you’re looking on how to do something, Google’s got the answer or at least a link to some platform that can show you how to do it.
The world is literally at your fingerprints. Use it.
