Delrish Moss, the former police chief for Ferguson, Missouri, joined the FIU Police Department as the department’s public information officer as of Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019.

Moss was originally a major in the Miami Police Department, serving on the force from 1984 until 2016, when he was hand-picked to become chief of the Ferguson PD after the former chief resigned in the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown on Aug. 9, 2014, which many considered to be a racially charged act of violence by the police.

Moss served in Ferguson from the time of his appointment until the end of 2018, when he decided to resign and return home to South Florida to be closer to family, according to FIUPD Chief Alexander Casas.

Casas told Student Media that Moss would be joining his team as a captain and will be overseeing dayshift patrols, as well as being the primary public information officer for FIUPD.

“Delrish Moss is a great hire. His experience is excellent and he’s got a lot of experience in community engagement and public interaction,” said Casas. “And he aligns with our strategic plan to increase our involvement and interaction with our FIU community.”
