Students can register for an opportunity to learn about the latest treatment interventions for mental health and educational problems in children and adolescents through the University’s Center for Children and Family annual mental health conference.
“Any student planning to work with children and adolescents should want to attend to learn the latest evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions for mental health and educational problems in children and adolescents,” said senior account manager, Rosanna Castro.
The 2019 Miami International Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference is presenting lectures given by professionals to give educational speeches and educate on child and adolescent health.
The MICAMH conference will be held from Wednesday, Feb. 20 until Friday, Feb. 22 at the Koven Center in the Biscayne Bay Campus.
For three days, professionals and students of all majors are invited to discuss clinical services, education, and research through key noted and workshop presentations.
“The students that would benefit the most are those with a major in psychology, social work and education,” said Castro.
Students will learn about treatment interventions through presentations, speeches, and workshops given by teaching professionals in the psychology community.
“Each year, we try to bring an array of experts, focusing on relevant topics in child mental health,” said Castro. “This year, there is a strong focus on issues that are impacting children directly in the schools, so we are addressing topics like bullying, suicide, mass violence and more.”
Professionals from many different universities across the nation like the University of California, New York University, University of Miami, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health will be discussing treatment involvements in the workshops.
Workshops will contain topics on ‘Treating Shy, Inhibited, and Socially Anxious Youth in Early Childhood’, ‘Adolescent Suicide Prevention’, Structural Stigma and LGBT Mental Health and more.
The University is also inviting speakers from the National Institutes of Mental Health, where they will be conducting a workshop, according to Castro.
Attendees, like school psychologists, social workers, nurses and psychologists, can obtain up to 18 continuing education credit hours when attending all three days that are needed for certificates or licenses.
“Those professions require that practitioners earn a specific number of Continuing Education Units per year to ensure that they are up to-date with current practices in their field,” said Castro.
The MICAMH conference is sponsored by organizations such as The Children’s Trust, the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools and was established in 1999 by psychologist and CCF director, William E. Pelham Jr.
Castro said in an email to Student Media that attending professionals will also give students the opportunity to network with leading experts as well as other students.
Registered students will have breaks with breakfast, lunch and coffee that are included in registration, along with parking.
