Out of Florida’s 12 public universities, FIU is number one.

In a Thursday email, FIU president Kenneth Jessell announced that FIU received the highest score for performance-based funding metrics out of all the state universities.

The ranking, from the Florida Board of Governors, reflects performance based on graduation rate, employment of graduates, cost of attendance and retention.

“The news is yet another accolade during an academic year full of milestone FIU achievements that included program-specific rankings success as well as university-wide improvements,” stated Jessell in the email to students and staff.

This year’s score, 95, is an increase of four points from last year – though a drop from 2021’s score of 99.

The ranking would also mark FIU’s third year in a row as a top-three school within the performance metric.

As Jessell pointed out in his email, the rankings come as Florida was named the top state for higher education by U.S. News and World Report for the seventh year in a row.

It’s a fact that’s been pointed out by students and staff recently as changes to higher education from Tallahassee continue in a steady stream. Critics argue that Florida’s standing as the top state for higher education could be threatened by those changes.
