Michael Cabral, a junior majoring in management of information systems and brother of Sigma Chi International Fraternity, exchanged a bag of Miss Vickie’s Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper flavored potato chips, from a University Parkview vending machine, for an iPad in this semester’s Snack Attack Challenge.

The challenge, which is a collaboration between the Office of Business Services and Vending Americas, was a treasure hunt of campus vending machines for four iPad prizes.

After retrieving the winning bag, Cabral made his way to the office with an armful of 12 bags of chips.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was the first time I ever won any promotion” Cabral said.

Students had chance to win a prize by purchasing Lays, Doritos, Sun Chips or Miss Vickie’s from the campus vending machines and finding a winning sticker on the bag. The University released clues through the shopFIU Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — urging students to stay connected.

The first clue: one step, two step is all it takes. Don’t miss a step while you’re down at the Bay. It might lead you to an iPad mini today.

Locations included the Nursing and Health Sciences building, Ziff Education Building, the Wolfe University Center and Academic Health Center 2.

The second clue: hungry like a Wolfe? Don’t just Lay around. Enjoy a classic crunch.

Only four snack bags were winning tickets, and all four bags have been claimed.

Machines were continuously checked from the start of the contest; and ended Feb. 10, when the last prize was claimed.

This contest is hosted twice a year, with another contest planned for later in the semester.

Stephen Gibson, operations manager at the Office of Business Services, said the contest benefits both the University and its sponsors.

“It creates awareness of vending machine locations and products,” Gibson said. “These events are typically developed by our business partners to build awareness and sales.”
